What is the Lakewood City Schools Issue 84?

It is a 3.25 mill bond issue, plus a 0.5 mill permanent improvement –

set aside to maintain buildings and required by the state

. It will cost less than $11 per month on a $100,000 property.

What will Issue 84 do for Lakewood?

Issue 84 finishes the Lakewood City School District’s Master

Facilities Plan.  The issue will complete the school construction plan

by building environmentally friendly, energy efficient, safe and secure facilities. Issue 84 replaces Grant, Lincoln, and Roosevelt Elementary Schools and finishes renovations at the high school by rebuilding the east end. This plan also eliminates all trailers across the street from Lakewood High School.

Why is Issue 84 important?

This issue finishes the job so all District students will have the opportunity to learn in quality facilities.   The new buildings will:

  • Lower operating costs.

  • Ensure up-to-date classroom space.

  • Improve instructional technology and digital applications.

  • Eliminate trailers at the High School.

  • Modernize safety systems.

What will the State of Ohio contribute to the project?

If we pass this issue now, the State of Ohio will contribute nearly half of the construction costs - $50  million dollars–making this project more affordable for our residents.

How do new school buildings help Lakewood?

By completing the construction process, we will have all new school buildings that help retain and attract new residents to the city. New buildings will also help keep our property values high.

What is the difference between a bond issue and an operating levy?

A bond issue provides funds to make capital improvements to buildings through replacement or renovation. Bond funds cannot be used for operating costs.  An operating levy provides funds associated with operating the district and the curriculum.

Will the community have input into the design of the new buildings?

Yes. Once voters approve the bond issue, Lakewood City Schools will engage the community in the building planning and design.   Ensuring that our buildings meet our students’ needs and the community’s expectations are top priorities.
